Create Your Own Site |
Welcome
to Free Gear Design's Website Design Guide.
If you require a complete index of this website then click

This guide is created to enable you to learn how to create your own
website for free. Creating your own site is fun and also interesting
at the same time, because as you progress with your site you will learn
new skills about software and the internet.
Tip: To make this guide easier to find again Add this Page to your Favorites (Bookmark). Firstly you will need a Web Creation and Managing Application, also known as a Web Authoring Tool, for this site I have used two applications Dreamweaver versions 3 & MX and Microsoft FrontPage 2000 this particular page was created in Dreamweaver MX but can be created in FrontPage just as easily. To download a FREE 30 day trail version of Dreamweaver MX click here. Dreamweaver is an excellent web creation and managing application used by many professionals, the 30 day trial download comes with a great tutorial to help you get started. For information on Dreamweaver MX, FrontPage 2000, 2002 books and other web design books click here. If you do not have FrontPage or Dreamweaver there are several other applications that can be used. Tip: You might already have a form of Web Creation and Managing Application on your system already try searching for FrontPage Express. If you want an alternative way to create a site on-line then there are many companies on-line that you can use to create great site's for FREE using their software, www.clickherefree.com and http://geocities.yahoo.com/home are just two of many. Please look under Assigned Space below for further details or click here. Once you have a web creation and management application you can start to create your own site. Tip: I suggest at this point you get a notepad and pencil and think of ideas for your site. Once you have planned your site you can begin. Start the web creation and managing application (Dreamweaver, FrontPage). At this point you don't have to be connected to the internet point. Your probably thinking '"How do I use the web application" . Firstly with FrontPage 98, 2000, 2002 and some other web creating application tools you don't need to know any HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language), this is the language used to create web documents, secondly if it is FrontPage 98, 2000 or 2002 simply press F1 for details on how to use the application, if your not using FrontPage, there should be a help option on the menu bar. You can also learn on-line try www.learndirect.co.uk (UK Only) or find a nearby learning centre try www.tbglearning.co.uk (UK Only), books can also be purchased for most web applications tools, from leading book stores and online by clicking here (World Wide). Tip: All help suggestions can be printed. The best way to learn a new application is to simply start it, and just practice. Now you have created your own site you need to publish it on the web. For this you need two things Assigned Space on the web and a FTP (File Transfer Protocol). In the case of this particular website I have bought the address with 200 MB worth of space. The cost was £29.99 for two years from www.freecall-uk.co.uk. Alternatively you can use other services such as Freeserve (www.freeserve.com). They will give you 15 MB of space which is plenty. Originally I used Freeserve the main reason Freeserve was my ISP (Internet Service Provider). Most ISP offer free web space usually between 10 - 15 MB, to find out if yours does, go to your ISP home page (the page you usually see first after your password and user name are verified). If it does not mention web space then use there help menu. There are loads of other FREE Web Space Hosting Services, on the web, here are some of the best http://geocities.yahoo.com/home, www.chilly-hippo.co.uk, www.freeyellow.com/index.gsp or www.brinkster.com where you receive 30MB of FREE web space, Built in FTP (so you can upload your pages from any computer, anywhere that is on-line), and ASP 3.0 Support for MS Access Databases. Tip: When you have found out information about your available web space you will be told the address needed to Upload (transfer your web files to the internet) your web site, you have just created. Remember to write this address down. You now have your Upload address, but you need the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software to help upload your website. For this site I have used Terrapin FTP (www.terra-net.com) the reason being it was originally suggested by Freeserve, it is available on a FREE 30 day trial, there are several other FTP's that are completely FREE available on the web try www.ftpx.com and see if FTP Explorer is available for FREE. Tip: FTP applications will usually come with user guides via the help menu. When you have uploaded your website use the following information to enhance your website. See which sites have links to yours and keep track of them visit www.addme.com. It is possible to find out who owns a website (registered) for the com, net. co.uk, org.uk extensions click here.
You can also get a google toolbar which can eliminate popup's for free, just click here.
